If you have diabetes, the way you pack can make or break your trip.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Whenever you travel, your diabetes goes along with you – so factor that in to how and what you pack.

  • Take twice the amount of diabetes medications and supplies you normally need.
  • If you use insulin, pack it in an insulated bag with refrigerated gel packs along with a glucagon emergency kit.
  • Keep snacks, glucose gel, or tablets with you in case your blood glucose drops.
  • Carry all of your diabetes supplies in your carry-on bag – including your snacks, and keep it within arm’s reach.
  • Keep your medical insurance card, emergency phone numbers, and a first aid kit handy.
