Before loading up on salty foods, think twice, especially if you have chronic kidney disease.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Sodium is a part of salt, and is in many canned, packaged, and fast foods, and seasonings. Eating less sodium helps to lower blood pressure, and for people with chronic kidney disease this is key – because it may slow down your disease.

To help keep your blood pressure controlled, take these steps to cut back on sodium:

  • Read food labels to see how much sodium you’re eating.
  • Eat less than 1,500 milligrams each day.
  • Choose fresh foods more often than canned or frozen.
  • Use spices, herbs, and sodium-free seasonings instead of salt.
