Setting goals and sticking to them can be tough, but if you have diabetes, it’s worth it.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

If you have diabetes, and you’re trying to get your blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, and lifestyle under control—you’re on the right track.

And although it’s a lot to manage, you can make it easier by setting small goals and taking small steps to get there. For example, slowly work up to getting 30 minutes of physical activity, such as brisk walking, most days of the week.

And focus on making better food choices, such as

  • skipping second helpings
  • drinking water instead of soda and fruit juice
  • and choosing fruits and vegetables as a snack
