CPSC provides a wide array of resources to enlist pool and spa operators and industry officials in national efforts to reduce drownings and submersion injuries in public and residential pools.

pool & spa safety equipment imageUsing appropriate safety equipment is critical to ensuring the safety of public swimming pools or spas. By using equipment that is compliant with the P&SSAct, pool operators and owners provide the highest level of protection for the public.

To comply with the P&SSAct, public pools and spas in the United States must employ entrapment protections established by the ASME/ANSI A112.19.8 performance standard regulating swimming pools and spas.

Pubic pools and spas must use compliant drain covers. For pools and spas with a single main drain other than an unblockable drain, they must be equipped with secondary safety devices or systems designed to prevent entrapment by pool or spa drains and that meet the Act’s requirements.

Sumps

CPSC staff supports the technical requirement of the ASME/ANSI A112.19.8-2007 standard, which calls for field-built sumps to have a depth, when measured from the bottom of the cover to the top of the outlet piping, of 1.5 times the diameter of the piping.
