Your visit to Lake Clark National Park and Preserve might include a quiet moment watching coastal Alaskan brown bears graze on the protein rich sedges at Silver Salmon Creek or Chinitna Bay. It could include a visit to Dick Proenneke’s historic cabin on upper Twin Lake. Or maybe your visit will be a rigorous backpacking trip with friends over tundra slopes and past turquoise lakes.Whatever your adventure includes the first step in planning a trip to the park is to choose your experience. Whether you have a day or a week there are a variety of on-line services offered at the link above to help you plan your visit.Photo: National Park Service

The Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge contains 7,000 acres of wildlife habitat for migratory birds, nesting sea turtles and the endangered Alabama beach mouse. The refuge was established by Congress in 1980 to preserve the coastal dune ecosystem, to protect threatened and endangered species, to provide compatible recreational opportunities, and to serve as a living laboratory for students and scientists.Photo: USFWS

A summer tradition: In the Source to the Sea Trek, Mainers and visitors paddle the Androscoggin River from Lake Umbagog Refuge to Brunswick, ME. A record 350 paddlers took part in the 17th annual Trek in July and August. Because of the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund, the whole river is now accessible to the public, and paddling-related businesses that provide jobs for our economy.Photo: Stew Stryker

The Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, was established in 1983 specifically for the protection of the endangered West Indian Manatee. This unique refuge preserves the last unspoiled and undeveloped habitat in Kings Bay, which forms the headwaters of the Crystal River. The refuge preserves the warm water spring havens, which provide critical habitat for the manatee populations that migrate here each winter. This manatee is sleeping in shallow water in order to benefit from the sun’s radiant heat on his back, while submerged in the springs 72 F degree waters. During the cold spells, most manatees prefer resting in shallow water for this reason.Photo: David Hinkel
