CPSC Decision on Unblockable Drains September 28, 2011
CPSC Commissioners voted 3-2 to revoke an earlier interpretation about unblockable drains and the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act. The new interpretation requires all single main drains of a blockable size to have a secondary or back-up system or device. The definition of an unblockable drain is determined by the size of the drain opening or sump, not the size of the cover over the opening. The Commission will be accepting public comments on its decision to set a compliance date of May 28, 2012.
The Federal Register Notice announcing a date extension to May 23, 2013 was published in May 2012.
Public Meeting: Pool and Spa Drain Cover Testing for Compliance to the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act
CPSC staff conducted a public meeting on April 5, 2011, to receive views from all interested parties about the testing methods used to establish the ratings of pool and spa drain covers under ASME/ANSI A112.19.8-2007, the standard referenced in the P&SS Act; the potential impact that variations of these test methods might have on the rating of pool and spa drain covers; and associated public health considerations.
