The Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism

Steven K. Galson, M.D., M.P.H.

Rear Admiral Steven K. Galson, M.D., M.P.H., has been the Acting Surgeon General of the United States since October 2007. As the nation's top public health physician, the Surgeon General communicates the best science, evidence, and data to the American people to help them to make healthy choices that impact their health, safety, and security.

As Acting Surgeon General, RADM Galson also serves as the operational Commander of the Commissioned Corps of the United States Public Health Service, a uniformed force of 6,000 health professional officers dedicated to promoting, protecting, and advancing the health and safety of the people of the United States.

Prior to his appointment, RADM Galson served as the Director of the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research and provided leadership for the more than 2,300 physicians, statisticians, chemists, pharmacologists, and others working to ensure the safety and effectiveness of drugs available to the American public.

RADM Galson began his Public Health Service career as an epidemiological investigator at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, after completing a residency in internal medicine at the Hospitals of the Medical College of Pennsylvania. He received his M.D. from the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in 1983, and a M.P.H. from the Harvard School of Public Health in 1990. He is board certified in General Preventive Medicine and Public Health and in Occupational Medicine.

Elizabeth G. Nabel, M.D.

Elizabeth G. Nabel, M.D. joined the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health in September 1999 as the Institute's Scientific Director of Clinical Research, and became Director of the Institute in February 2005. Previously, she had been Chief, Division of Cardiology, Director, Cardiovascular Research Center, and Professor of Internal Medicine and Physiology at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Nabel has intertwined basic research and translation to clinical medicine and practice throughout her career and has championed the concept of “bench to bedside.” Her current research interests are focused on the regulation of vascular growth and the molecular genetics of vascular diseases.
Dr. Nabel is an editorial board member of The New England Journal of Medicine. She has been a reviewing editor for Science and an editorial board member of the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

Dr. Nabel received her medical education at Cornell University Medical College and is a board-certified cardiologist.

Carolyn M. Clancy, M.D.

Carolyn M. Clancy, M.D., serves as Director, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Prior to her appointment as Director on February 5, 2003, Dr. Clancy had served as AHRQ's Acting Director since March 2002 and before that Director of AHRQ's Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research.

Dr. Clancy is a general internist and health services researcher, and a graduate of Boston College and the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Following clinical training in internal medicine, Dr. Clancy was a Henry Kaiser Family Foundation Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania. She was also an assistant professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond prior to joining AHRQ (then named the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research) in 1990.

Her major research interests include women's health, primary care, access to care, and the impact of financial incentives on physicians' decisions. She holds an academic appointment at George Washington University School of Medicine as a Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Medicine and serves as Senior Associate Editor, Health Services Research. Dr. Clancy is a member of the editorial boards of the American Journal of Public Health; Annals of Family Medicine; Journal of General Internal Medicine; and the Medical Care Research and Review.

Le Keisha Ni’ Cole Ruffin

Le Keisha Ni’ Cole Ruffin, author of the motivational book “Broken to Wholeness,” is an aspiring poet who has been writing motivational and spirit-oriented prose focused on the gospel of Jesus Christ for more than 15 years.

Ms. Ruffin and her husband, Craig, have a 4-year-old daughter, Caitlin Lei’ Lana. She graduated magna cum laude from Central Michigan University, with a B.S. in Organization Administration.

Ms. Ruffin has a strong passion for music and plans to set some of her songs and poems to music.
