Golden Knights Honor USPHS Officers Serving Under the DoD Mental Health Partnership at Fort Bragg with a Tandem Jump
On May 17th, 2012, 11 U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps officers were honored with the rare opportunity to jump with the acclaimed U.S. Army Golden Knights. The Golden Knights, a world-renowned demonstration and competition parachute team, consist of paratroopers who travel the country thrilling audiences and promoting the U.S. Army. The Golden Knights occasionally honor individuals and organizations by allowing them to participate in jumps; past honorees, such as Chuck Norris and President George H.W. Bush, have been selected from a wide variety of fields. Stationed at the “Home of the Airborne” in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the 90 soldiers that make up the Golden Knights have each been trained in at least one of the 200 military occupational specialties offered by the U.S. Army.

In December of 2011, after 14 years as an active duty officer, MAJ Laura Hudson of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps became LCDR Laura Hudson of the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps. A psychiatric nurse practitioner in both services, LCDR Hudson joked that, “The biggest difference is that it confused the heck out of my patients when I came back with a different uniform!” LCDR Hudson’s role is almost exclusively patient care; she sees about nine patients a day.

On June 12th, 2012, Surgeon General Regina Benjamin announced that CAPT Robert DeMartino, MD, will officially step into the role of Commissioned Corps Chief of Staff. CAPT DeMartino is currently Director, Behavioral Medicine Division in the Office of the Chief Medical Officer, Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, Department of Defense (DoD). He is a physician trained in both internal medicine and psychiatry. In addition to his great enthusiasm and professional demeanor, he is a proven leader who brings with him superb analytic, problem solving and communication skills, a strong mission focus, and critical and strategic thinking.

In 1944, the Public Health Service act was passed which allowed females to be commissioned.

History of Women in the USPHS
During WWII, women between the ages of 20-50 were recruited to participate in the Armed Forces as well as in the U.S. Public Health Service and the Red Cross to assist with the war effort. At that time, women’s roles were limited to working with other women and they rarely had an opportunity to supervise men. To address the critical shortage of nurses during WWII, Congress passed the Nurse Training Act of 1943, which created a uniformed Cadet Nurse Corps (formerly the “Victory Nurse Corps”) within the USPHS.

On August 6, 2007, the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps announced a new $60,000 accession bonus for dentists who sign a 4-year active duty agreement. Officers on USNS Comfort and Local Residents Honored With Visit by former Acting Surgeon General Moritsugu
Commissioned Corps officers serving on the USNS Comfort recently hosted a distinguished visitor: former Acting U.S. Surgeon General Kenneth Moritsugu. During one of his last trips before his retirement at the end of September, RADM Moritsugu traveled to the ship in the Caribbean September 19-21 to show his support for his officers participating in the Comfort?s humanitarian mission. The Surgeon General?s visit also demonstrated the U.S. Public Health Service?s commitment to collaborating with other uniformed services in their shared mission of protecting and improving public health. His visit was a one of his last official trips ending an extraordinary career that included 37 years in the U.S. Public Health Service.

Commissioned Corps Officers Continue Humanitarian Mission Aboard the USS Peleliu
A multidisciplinary team of officers in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps is serving on the USS Peleliu, a multipurpose amphibious ship on a medical, dental, public health, and humanitarian-assistance mission in Southeast Asia and the Western and Outer Pacific Islands. The ship departed San Diego on May 23, 2007. In addition to providing humanitarian assistance, the team will help build the public health infrastructure in communities near where the ship docks.
