Teacher Resources



Are you seeking to invoke wonder and excitement in your students while teaching them at the same time? Consider introducing them to ways we at the U.S. Department of the Interior manage America's land, water and wildlife. Our Interior bureaus have developed practical ideas, Web resources and fun activities for your classroom. In using them, you may not only spark your students' interest in our nation's natural resources but also help them think about science, math and history in a different way: Bureau of Indian Affairs

Our Bureau of Indian Affairs provides a broad spectrum of services to American Indian and Alaska Natives. Through the Bureau of Indian Education, it provides resources for teachers to deliver quality education opportunities in accordance with a tribe's needs for cultural and economic well-being.  

Bureau of Land Management

Our Bureau of Land Management, the nation's largest land manager, offers educational resources ranging from history and culture to fisheries and watersheds. BLM provides educators with background information and new tools, including electronic field trips. Topics include archaeology, fire ecology and energy on public lands.   

Bureau of Reclamation

Our Bureau of Reclamation, the largest wholesaler of water in the nation, offers exciting ways to learn how past and present water-management decisions are shaping America's future. Materials include a packet to promote understanding of the impact of Hoover Dam has had on history, technology and the environment.

Minerals Management Service

Our Minerals Management Service manages many energy resources in, over and under the ocean. MMS works with educators and students to improve access to scientific information and to increase interest in and an understanding of math and science. Materials provide background information, presentation and hands-on activities to study both renewable and nonrenewable energy.

National Park Service

Our National Park Service features lesson plans, fun and games to inspire youth of all backgrounds to become future stewards of our national parks. Topics explore the art, science, history and nature that the National Park System preserves for America's enjoyment, education and inspiration.

Office of Surface Mining

Our Office of Surface Mining is making education fun while providing information on the work they do to reclaim abandoned mine lands and regulate coal mines.  Students will learn how OSM strives to balance our nation's need for coal with its need to protect the environment from the adverse effects of surface coal mining. 

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Our U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the government's premiere conservation agency, provides resources to help students learn how to conserve, protect and enhance our nation's fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats. Resources include lesson plans, activities, community-service projects and background information.

U.S. Geological Survey

Our U.S. Geological Survey, the nation's largest natural-science agency, helps to educate the public about natural resources, natural hazards, geospatial data and others issues affecting our quality of life. USGS works with educators and students to increase understanding of the critical role science plays in responsible decision making. Resources include lessons, data and maps.
