Attorney General Eric Holder’s Task Force on Children Exposed to Violence Briefs Congress
Over the last year, the Attorney General’s Task Force on Children Exposed to Violence has traveled the country, listening to practitioners, policymakers, academics, concerned citizens, and victims. Its goal was to find out how violence and abuse are affecting our kids and our communities and to explore what actions we can take to prevent children’s exposure to violence and mitigate its effects. Federal Agencies Convene Week-Long Intertribal Youth Summit in Washington, DC
Focuses on Critical Youth Issues and Youth Leadership
This week, more than 200 American Indian youth and adult leaders from 53 tribal communities across the country convened at the week-long 2012 National Intertribal Youth Summit in Washington, DC. Students arrived Saturday to attend the Summit which featured Federal officials from the White House and the Departments of Justice, Interior, Health and Human Services and Education. The Summit provided a unique opportunity for Federal officials to hear directly from tribal youth through discussions on topics such as education, health, cultural preservation, civic engagement, and leadership development.

Justice Department Commemorates National Missing Children’s Day
The disappearance of 6-year-old Etan Patz on May 25, 1979, of Adam Walsh in 1981, and the murders of 29 children in Atlanta during those same years forced our nation to realize we had no national response system in place to coordinate the efforts among federal, state, and local law enforcement when children went missing.

Private Sector Joins Justice Department, Protects Consumers Against Vehicle Fraud, Hazardous Vehicles
The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) recently announced partnerships designed to fight consumer fraud and reduce the number of unsafe or stolen vehicles retitled or sold. Data provider companies, Auto Data Direct, Inc., Carco Group, Inc., CARFAX, CVR, Experian Automotive, Mobiletrac, LLC., Motor Vehicle Software Corporation, RigDig, VINAudit.com, LLC., and VINSmart, joined BJA's effort to protect consumers by providing consumer access to the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System.

In remarks at the National Intertribal Youth Summit, on Monday, July 30, Acting Assistant Attorney General Mary Lou Leary said, "I find it remarkable and commendable that so many young tribal members are so strongly invested in the future of their communities. The pride you show in your heritage and the concern you display for maintaining it are truly admirable... it’s gratifying for those of us in leadership positions at the federal and tribal levels to see this kind of commitment."

Tribal Youth Leadership Conference Provides Opportunity for Federal Officials to Hear from Youth
Youth from tribal communities across the country will attend the week-long 2012 National Intertribal Youth Summit in Washington, DC from Saturday, July 28- Thursday, Aug. 2. The Summit features officials from the White House and the Departments of Justice, Interior, Health and Human Services and Energy, and provides opportunities for tribal youth to identify, learn, and hone leadership skills in an effort to address many of the challenges facing communities in Indian Country.

Federal Apprehensions for Immigration Violations Declined While Arrests Tripled, BJS Report Finds
The Bureau of Justice Statistics recently released the Immigration Offenders in the Federal Justice System, 2010 report, finding that apprehensions for immigration violations dropped to 516,992 in 2010, the lowest level since 1972, from a peak of 1.8 million violations in 2000.

FTC Releases Resource on Child Identity Thefts
The Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs, along with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), recently released "Safeguarding Your Child's Future," a resource guide to help parents avoid, recognize, and repair the damage caused by child identity theft.

The Office of Justice Programs’ Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) today released the bulletin Effects and Consequences of Underage Drinking. It presents findings on the potential neurological damage, social and emotional consequences, health and safety risks and academic problems the underage drinker may experience.

More than half of the nation’s violent crimes, or nearly 3.4 million violent victimizations per year, went unreported to the police between 2006 and 2010, according to a new report published by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS).
