Description

The American Chronic Pain Association (ACPA) is a nonprofit organization with more than 800 chapters in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Ireland, Russia, Australia, and New Zealand. The organization provides a support system for those suffering from chronic pain, a pain that goes on longer than 6 months. The organization helps individuals with chronic pain learn to deal with the pain in a positive manner and become active participants in their own recovery. Pain is managed through methods such as relaxation techniques, exercise, assertiveness training, sleep, hygiene, nutrition, self-awareness, and family involvement. The group sessions are led by actual persons with chronic pain. A workbook is available to aid people with chronic pain regain control of their lives.

The organization publishes a quarterly newsletter ACPA Chronicle, the ACPA Member's Workbook, an advanced pain management workbook, and two relaxation tapes to help members understand chronic pain and enhance their participation in an ACPA group. A leader's manual is available to anyone interested in starting a group. Leaders must be people with chronic pain.
