Transform, Protect and Advance – DOE’s IT Modernization Strategy
The Obama Administration’s Digital Government Strategy provides a vision for a 21st century government that lays a strong foundation for modernizing technology services across the Federal Government. At Energy, we’re implementing a three-pillar approach -- Transform, Protect and Advance – as part of this broader strategy, driving more secure, cost-effective, and efficient IT infrastructure and services.
Transforming IT architecture to drive cost savings and streamlined operations
The Department is leveraging new tools and services that will further reduce costs and streamline operations – making our IT infrastructure more agile and flexible. This commitment lays the foundation for our digital strategy and utilizes the best practices of our public and private partners, as well as other program offices across the Department. As part of this broader effort, we are working to consolidate and connect our enterprise networks and services, helping to streamline, simplify, and reduce the cost of IT solutions and acquisition. We are also working collaboratively within Energy to establish enterprise-wide architecture, policy and standards that give us the flexibility to address different devices and platforms and make sure we’re responding to IT needs quickly and effectively. Finally, the Department has simplified its IT governance structures to provide more effective management.
Protecting information and increasing collaboration across the enterprise
From responding to cyber incidents to integrating cybsecurity into new technology investments, we continue to strengthen our risk management operations, streamline information sharing, and improve our training and awareness programs across the Department, including its field sites and offices.
We have developed the Joint Cybsecurity Coordination Center (JC3) that will leverage the collaborative power of the Department, including the National Nuclear Security Administration and the Department’s National Laboratories in the defense of our cyber networks. Currently, the JC3 is completing its initial operating capability stage and has begun to consolidate disparate functions such as incident reporting and streamline information sharing, while preserving each organization’s unique requirements and information.
Advancing new capabilities into our IT infrastructure
Energy’s National Laboratories conduct world-class research and development across a wide range of areas, from basic science to cybersecurity to energy uses and sources. We’re working to leverage their strengths and unique capabilities to further improve our infrastructure and cyber networks. As part of this, we are establishing the Cyber Sciences Laboratory, which will create collaboration that has never been achieved before, combining the cyber expertise and resources of our National Laboratories and enhancing the transition of research, and development advances into our day to day operations.
Through this collaboration among our public and private partners and Departmental offices and organizations, we are taking a unified approach to transforming our IT environment to remain a mission-focused, employee empowering, and fiscally efficient enterprise.
