I proudly represent California's Central Coast, the 20th Congressional District and serve as the Ranking Member on the House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee.
    About
  1. Cheers to you Monterey Wine Country! Not only are you ranked as one of Wine Enthusiast Magazine top 10 wine destinations in the world, but you are also the only California location and one of only three US sites to make the list. Read what made the magazine’s reporters fall for Monterey. http://bit.ly/UXaspU

  2. Like every New Year, it is out with the old and in with the new. With the start of the new Congress today, we are officially the 20th Congressional District of California instead of the 17th. We also are welcoming some new friends from the parts of Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties joining our district. No matter the number, to us it will always the Central Coast or as I prefer to say...home.
  3. Great news for the Central Coast. My bill to establish Pinnacles National Park passed the Senate last night and heads to the President's desk for his signature. The 59th National Park is going to be right here in our backyard.

  4. President Obama signed the Marine Debris Act into law today, a bill I authored in the House that will help combat the 11 billion pounds of trash dumped in our ocean each year. The late Senator Daniel Inouye championed this bill in the Senate. As we say aloha to this great man, I can think of no better tribute to this true friend of the oceans.
  5. Big thanks to Senator Boxer and Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey for pushing forward the proposed expansion of two National Marine Sanctuaries. I was proud to stand with them today to announce this great news. http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_22231457/obama-expand-national-marine-sanctuaries-permanently-ban-oil

  6. Today, I stood with my fellow Democrats to call on Speaker Boehner to work with us to enact common sense legislation to prevent another tragic shooting. We need to consider real solutions like limiting the size of clips, closing the gun show loophole and keeping the most dangerous guns off the street.

  7. As a father and a grandfather, my heart goes out to the families affected by today’s tragic shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. I join with all Americans in prayer for the young lives that were loss in this horrific event at Sandy Hook Elementary.

In the coming days, many will say that we should not politicize this tragedy by using it as a platform for a tough discussion on gun control. However, w...e must ignore those calls because to do so would be the real politicization of this violent act.

No longer can we simply turn away from these mass shootings and hope that one day they will end. Instead, we must have a real and frank discussion on the role of guns in our society. Congress and the states must pursue meaningful gun control laws that prevent weapons from getting into the hands of individuals who would commit these horrendous crimes.

Our nation and the children of Sandy Hook Elementary demand that we have that discussion now.

  8. Today the Marine Debris Act was sent to the President's desk for his signature. The act helps to continue funding the NOAA's Marine Debris Program that combats the harmful effects of ocean trash. With storms like Hurricane Sandy and last ...year's Japanese tsunami, the problems associated with marine debris have been increasing. I was proud to sponsor this common sense legislation that received unanimous support in both the House and Senate, so that one day our oceans may be healthy and debris free.See More
