Scott Statement on New Report Highlighting Effect of Sequestration on Impact Aid to Virginia Schools
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott issued the following statement on a new report issued by the Center for American Progress, a Washington, DC based think-tank, highlighting the impact sequestration will have on military families and specifically cuts to Impact Aid:
"Impact Aid is a vital federal program that provides critical funding to school districts impacted by the loss of property taxes due to tax-exempt military installations located near or within the school district. Sequestration cuts to Impact Aid will be devastating to local school districts in my congressional district. According to this analysis from the Center for American Progress, Hampton Roads' schools could lose at least $1.32 million in Impact Aid funding. This would further tighten local school budgets, potentially leading to teacher layoffs and resulting in larger class sizes and less attention on the needs of individual students. Congress must prioritize cancelling the sequester before considering any extension of the Bush-era tax cuts, which will cost approximately $4 trillion over the next ten years."
