The Community Relations Service Announces the Director’s Summer Internship Program

The Director of the Community Relations Service at the U.S Department of Justice is pleased to announce the continuation of his paid summer internship at CRS’ national headquarters in Washington, DC. The Director’s Internship Program will be a unique opportunity for an undergraduate or graduate student to work directly with the Director and to gain substantial experience working in a federal agency.

The Director’s Internship Program is a highly competitive and paid opportunity to work closely with the Director of the Community Relations Service (CRS). Created by the Civil Rights Act of 1964, CRS is the only Federal agency dedicated to resolving conflicts and tensions across America that arise from differences of gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, disability, race, color, or national origin.

The Director’s intern will attend meetings with the Director and participate in various events and projects at his/her request, but will also be asked to research and evaluate current CRS programs and initiatives and to submit recommendations for new programs. This internship is not simply about filing papers or answering phones, but instead is a real chance to contribute to an Agency dedicated to improving community relations in the United States.

In this program, the intern will have the opportunity to witness the day-to-day operations of a Federal agency and to see first-hand how CRS Headquarters serves the country. By assisting the Director on a variety of projects, the Director’s intern will participate in the development of public policy and leave his or her mark on the Agency through their dedicated work.

Applicants must be currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate students and submit a current official university transcript. Although all applicants will be considered, competitive candidates will have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0, completed at least their junior year in college, exhibit excellent communication skills, computer proficiency, professionalism, and dependability. Additionally, they must be highly motivated and willing to contribute where needed.

Although this internship is perfect for those interested in learning about and working in federal agencies, we strongly encourage students from diverse academic backgrounds—anything from biology to business—to consider and apply for this unique opportunity. The Director of CRS would value the opportunity to work closely with an individual who will bring diversity and a fresh perspective to our agency, as well as be able to think critically about the issues the Agency addresses on a daily basis. Thus, a specific interest in politics and the federal government is not necessary. This internship is paid, however, please contact the Intern Coordinator with specific compensation questions.

The application must be received by March 15th. Decisions will be made and applicants notified by April 15th.
