Internship Opportunities
Student Internship

The Professional Responsibility Advisory Office (PRAO) offers student intern positions. PRAO offers volunteer and academic credit internships to law students. PRAO also participates in the summer legal internship program (“SLIP”).

Interns work almost entirely on substantive matters, assisting PRAO attorneys in providing advice on professional responsibility issues and in preparing for presentations to other components of the Department. Interns also conduct research and complete both short and long-term assignments and memoranda. During the course of their internship, interns work with most PRAO attorneys who are from diverse legal backgrounds both from within and outside of the Department. Interns also participate in all office-wide substantive discussions of professional responsibility issues.

Work Schedules

PRAO is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. During the academic year, legal intern schedules are flexible. In the summer, SLIP interns work a 40 hour week.

Academic Credit

Students accepted for Volunteer Legal Intern positions may earn academic credit for working in our office. Information on academic credit programs can be obtained from school placement offices.

Requirements

Applicants for an internship must be United States citizens and have completed their first year of law school. Please note that every student internship is contingent upon the satisfactory completion of a security clearance. Under no circumstances will a student be allowed to work in any capacity before his or her security clearance is successfully completed.

Application Procedures

PRAO participates in the SLIP program. Applications for the SLIP program can be found at http://www.justice.gov/careers/legal/summer-intern.html.

Additional information and application procedures for PRAO’s Spring and Fall Volunteer Legal Intern positions are available at http://www.justice.gov/careers/legal/volunteer-opp.html .
