Washington, DC - The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and the Chief Human Capital Officers (CHCO) Council announced that federal employees donated 5,793,446 pounds of nonperishable food items for the Feds Feed Families (FFF) 2011 summer food drive. That is equivalent to over 64,000 pounds donated per day. Recognizing the continued need to support America's families, this year's collection goal was two million pounds, which was far exceeded. The items were collected nationwide and donated to food banks all over the country.
"Feds Feed Families was a resounding success," said OPM Director John Berry. "This year's goal was 2 million pounds and federal employees opened up their hearts to deliver an astounding record total of food items and other essentials. This is just one more reminder of the generosity of federal employees. Over the last few decades, federal employees have given billions of dollars to charity, and they always deliver when called to action. Thank you to every federal worker who donated."
This governmentwide effort included more than 40 agencies. The two agencies that brought in the most were our co-chairs, the Department of Defense, which donated 2,004,613 pounds, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which donated 1,791,393 pounds. All other federal agencies, together, donated 1,997,440 pounds.
Over the past three years, FFF results have increased exponentially. In 2009, the first year of FFF, federal employees donated 1 million pounds of nonperishable food items and in 2010 federal employees donated 1.7 million pounds.
FFF, which ran from June 1, 2011, through August 31, 2011, is a federal food drive organized by the CHCO Council in partnership with OPM. The drive is a voluntary effort for federal employees to give back to the community by helping those in need.
