Worldwide Rally For Recovery!

(9/10/2012)

WORLDWIDE RALLY FOR RECOVERY! on SEPTEMBER 15, 2012

Celebrations in Detroit, MI, Hartford, CT, Dublin, Ireland to be streamed live, call for end to discriminatory policies, support for people seeking or in addiction recovery

(Washington, DC, September 10, 2012) – Around the world, tens of thousands of people will speak out, march, run and walk as part of Rally for Recovery! on Saturday, September 15th during the 23rd annual Recovery Month observances.  From Detroit, MI and Hartford, CT to Dublin, Ireland, people in recovery, their families, friends and allies will put a face and a voice to recovery from addiction. They will call for improved policies so that others can get the help they need to recover. For the first time ever, rallies in the U.S. and the U.K. will be available for viewing at http://www.ezcasts.com/recovery2012/RecoveryWalk.asp.

The Michigan Celebrate Recovery Walk & Rally in Detroit will serve as this year’s national “hub” for activities happening across the U.S. and worldwide. The event has attracted national, state, and local dignitaries, including Gil Kerlikowske, Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. Over 5,000 people are expected to attend.

“Over 20 million Americans are in long-term recovery from addiction, benefiting themselves, their families and communities,” said Dona Dmitrovic, Chair of Faces & Voices of Recovery Board of Directors. “We thank everyone who’s standing up for recovery, offering hope and opportunity for people who still need help to recover.” Faces & Voices of Recovery is the national organization coordinating Rally for Recovery! events during September, National Recovery Month.

Since its beginning in 2007, the annual Rally for Recovery! has grown from 30,000 participants to 100,000 in 2011.  This year, for the sixth annual Rally for Recovery!, participants nationwide will be encouraged to participate as individuals in our nation’s civic life through voter registration and education; contacting members of Congress about how recovery saves health care dollars and lives; sharing why recovery is important to them; and celebrating their growing visibility. They will be joined by a vast array of elected officials, celebrities, public officials, law enforcement officers and other allies.

As part of Rally for Recovery!, local community organizations are also engaging friends, neighbors and political leaders in the 2012 election cycle.  Groups are registering voters, asking candidates questions, organizing Candidate Forums and Town Hall meetings and will help “get out the vote” on Election Day.
