Water: Marine Debris
The 2012 International Coastal Cleanup was a Great Success!
On Saturday, September 15, 2012, Ocean Conservancy, with help from EPA and other sponsors, hosted the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC). The ICC is an annual event that includes over 100 countries and territories bordering every major body of water on Earth. It is the world's largest volunteer effort to clean up the marine environment and collect marine environmental data from both land and sea.
During the 2011 ICC, more than 598,000 volunteers removed over 9 million pounds of trash
from cleanup sites around the world. The top ten items found
included cigarettes, caps/lids, plastic beverage bottles,
plastic bags, and food wrappers/containers. For more information about the 2011 ICC, please visit Ocean Conservancy's 2012 Data Release webpage.
