SAMHSA’s 20th Anniversary
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is celebrating its 20th anniversary and two decades of progress in the behavioral health field. Since SAMHSA was created in 1992, people with mental and substance use disorders have seen many improvements in their lives. The rise of the consumer and recovery movements has made it possible for individuals to be active participants in their own care and recovery. The development of community coalitions, trauma-informed care, treatment drug courts, and offender re-entry programs has helped communities and families build resilience and helped people get the assistance they need. Additionally, legislative milestones such as the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act and the Affordable Care Act will expand access to prevention, treatment, and recovery support services. SAMHSA looks forward to continuing to work with its colleagues in the pursuit of better health for all American citizens.
