Tools

USDA has developed a number of online tools to help landowners assess the value their lands may have to offer in the emerging environmental marketplace for benefits such as carbon sequestration and nutrient load reduction. Depending on the type of information the landowner is seeking, one tool or a combination of tools may be useful.

USDA collaborates extensively with research communities to create these tools and update them to reflect the latest science.

NTT (BETA): Nutrient Tracking Tool
The NTT couples the scientifically rigorous Agricultural Policy / Environmental eXtender (APEX) model with a user-friendly, web-based interface to allow users to easily calculate nitrogen, phosphorus, sediment, and yield savings from varying agricultural practices and approaches. Users may test hypothetical management and cropping scenarios to understand net change to these constituents at the farm scale and make more informed business decisions.

COMET-VR 2.0: Carbon Online Management Tool
COMET-VR 2.0 helps farmers and ranchers evaluate on-farm greenhouse gas emissions and sequestration options associated with the implementation of conservation practices for cropland, pasture, rangeland, orchards, and agroforestry. This user-friendly tool estimates biomass and soil carbon stock changes, carbon dioxide emissions from on-farm energy use, and nitrous oxide emissions from fertilizer and manure applications.

COLE: Carbon On Line Estimator
COLE is a tool developed by the U.S. Forest Service to help landowners generate forest carbon inventory estimates useful for developing a forest management plan or evaluating the profitability of participating in markets for forest carbon. Summary

CVal
CVal is a powerful discounted cash flow spreadsheet tool that will help foresters, managers, and project developers work with private forest landowners to assess the economic profitability of participating in carbon markets. Automated financial break-even analyses in the macros version quickly assess threshold values of key variables for profitable projects. Summary

iTree
The iTree suite of software tools is designed to allow municipalities to value the environmental benefits of urban trees, including a monetary carbon sequestration value. The application is currently being used by over 6,000 communities worldwide to help integrate urban forestry into city planning initiatives.

GRACEnet: Greenhouse gas Reduction through Agricultural Carbon Enhancement Network
The GRACEnet research project is compiling a database of agricultural practices that will enhance carbon sequestration in soils in order to promote sustainability and provide a sound scientific basis for carbon credits and trading programs.

Energy Awareness Consumption Tools:
Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has developed four energy tools to help farmers and ranchers identify where they can reduce their energy costs. The results generated are estimates based on NRCS models. Please contact your local NRCS office for additional assistance.
