Recovery Act Research and Capital Improvement Funding at the National Institutes of Health (NIH)

The Recovery Act provides a total of $10.4 billion for medical research, all available for two years—through September 2010. Below is a summary:

Scientific research priorities: $8.2 billion

• $7.4 billion is available to the NIH Institutes and Centers
• $800 million will support several programs, including the Challenge Grants, a program designed to focus on health and science problems where progress can be expected in two years. This funding is administered by the NIH Office of the Director.
• The remainder of funds will support additional scientific research-related activities that also align with the overall purposes of the Act.

Construction, Maintenance, Alterations, and Equipment: $2.2 billion

• $1 billion is available to the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) in support of all NIH funded research institutions’ construction, repairs and alterations
• $300 million is set aside for shared instrumentation and other capital equipment
• $500 million goes for NIH buildings and facilities maintenace and management, especially priority repair, construction and improvement projects
• $400 million for Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER)
