HHS’s Program Support Center closes Silver Spring, Md data center

HHS’s Program Support Center (PSC) has closed its Silver Spring data center in support of the Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative (FDCCI).  The Obama administration initiative seeks to eliminate waste by consolidating federal data centers that are no longer needed and pursue IT investments toward more efficient and secure computing platforms.

In operation since 1997, the Silver Spring data center housed more than two terabytes of information in four IT production systems and several test and development environments.  This 2,900-square foot data center enabled PSC to operate and manage HHS applications systems such as time and attendance, payroll, human resources, financial management, procurement, invoice and billing.

HHS plans to close at least 38 of its 181 data centers by 2015 and to make significant reductions in server and rack assets. Sixteen of the 38 targeted data centers have already been consolidated or decommissioned.

Said PSC Director Paul S. Bartley, “The enterprise applications systems were migrated to the cloud seamlessly, without any interruption to the vital support services we provide to the Department.”

HHS developed an approach that includes previously planned consolidations of data centers, promotion of enterprise solutions, and implementation of data center operations policies that will result in more efficient data center utilization, lower hardware and software costs and reductions in power consumption across HHS data centers.
