First Lady Michelle Obama delivered remarks to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) today. For more than 30 years, CHCI has been working to develop the next generation of leaders for the future of the Hispanic community and the country as a whole through scholarships, fellowships, and career programs.

By Presidential proclamation and Congressional action, September 2010 has been declared the first Childhood Obesity Awareness Month.  Of course, for our Let’s Move! team, every month is about solving the problem of childhood obesity, but we will do some special things this month to encourage everyone to take action.

“So today I’m going to talk about food, which is something that all of you here today know a little bit about,” said First Lady Michelle Obama to an audience representing forty percent of the nearly one million restaurants in the United States, from the biggest chains to the smallest diners, at the National Restaurant Association Meeting in Washington, DC.

This week, the First Lady traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana to kick off the next phase her Let’s Move! initiative to raise a healthier generation of kids. In the morning, Mrs. Obama spoke to students and teachers at Brock Elementary, then she joined kids and NFL players for football drills at Woldenberg Park.

“Young people are happier and healthier when they experience the outdoors regularly,” said Reclamation Commissioner Michael Connor. The Bureau of Reclamation and the Catch a Special Thrill Foundation (C.A.S.T.) put on a series of fishing events for disabled children and their families so they can do just that - experience America’s great outdoors and have fun.

Ending childhood obesity within a generation is the central goal of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative. We know achieving this goal requires all of us to work together – parents, teachers, schools, chefs, community leaders, Federal, State and local elected officials and our children – there’s a role for each of us to play.

Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, affecting children across the nation and changing country’s overall health and wellness.  Building on the momentum of the Let’s Move! campaign and highlighting the steps that individuals, families and communities can take to address this issue, President Obama recently issued a proclamation making September 2010 National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month.
