Secretary Duncan continues the third annual back-to-school bus tour with events in Colo., Kan., Mo., W.Va., Va., and D.C.

Secretary Duncan will visit Lowry Elementary School in Denver, Colo., to highlight First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move! ” campaign that focuses on confronting and ending childhood obesity. He will be joined by U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, and will visit with students during the lunch hour and take part in a group fitness activity. Secretary Duncan and Acting Assistant Secretary for Special Education and Rehabilitative Services Michael Yudin will visit the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site in Topeka, Kan. Secretary Duncan will discuss the imperative to provide all students with equal educational opportunities. Duncan and Yudin will join Topeka Mayor William Bunten, educators, and local officials for a series of speeches and a presentation by area students. Dennis Van Roekel, president of the National Education Association, and David Smith, superintendent of the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site, will deliver remarks. Secretary Duncan, joined by National Education Association President Dennis Van Roekel, will visit Emporia, Kan., for a tour of the National Teacher Hall of Fame. The Secretary will also lead a town hall discussion on teacher preparation, recruitment, and other education issues with students, prospective teachers and community members at Emporia State University

Secretary Duncan and other senior Department officials will travel to Kansas City, Mo., where they will host a town hall on education and the Hispanic community at the Penn Valley campus of Metropolitan Community College. He will kick off his visit to Metropolitan Community College with Marco Davis, deputy director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans; Michael Yudin, acting assistant secretary for special education and rehabilitative services; and Janet Murguia, president and CEO of the National Council of La Raza. During the event, Duncan and Murguia will take questions from community members. The town hall will be available for viewing live online here. A press availability will follow the event.

Secretary Duncan will visit Mount View High School in McDowell County for a panel discussion with community members and stakeholders. He will be joined by Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers. Participants will discuss how to build public-private partnerships to support educational improvement as the path to a brighter economic future. Mount View is one of 20 schools in West Virginia that has received a part of $28.5 million in School Improvement Grants (SIG) awarded to the state by the Education Department during the past three years to turn around schools and improve student achievement. Secretary Duncan will lead a town hall discussion that will explore indicators of college and career readiness at Virginia Western Community College (VWCC) in Roanoke, Va. Also participating in the town hall will be Assistant Secretary for Vocational and Adult Education Brenda Dann-Messier, VWCC faculty, students, regional employers, and local community members. Secretary Duncan will release the “Adult College Completion Toolkit,” a collection of resources designed to connect state administrators and local practitioners to the strategies, resources, and technical assistance tools resulting from the Department’s work in the area of adult education. Secretary Duncan and senior staff at the Department of Education will wrap up the 2012 back-to-school bus tour with a rally on the plaza at the Department’s headquarters building, 400 Maryland Avenue, S.W., Washington, D.C. The Education Drives America wrap-up rally will include a back-to-school address by Secretary Duncan, and performances from the OMG Girlz and Kids These Days (KTD).
