Interview with poetry author and migraine sufferer, Pam Kress-Dunn

 

Pam Kress-Dunn is the medical librarian at Mercy Medical Center – Dubuque, a community hospital with Magnet status in Dubuque, Iowa. She holds master’s degrees in library science and English, and a master of fine arts degree in poetry writing. She was diagnosed with transformed migraine at the Michigan Head Pain and Neurological Institute in March 2010 and spent over two weeks in the Head Pain unit at Chelsea Hospital. Her once-daily headaches are now much better managed, and she has learned to give herself injections when all else fails. This will, no doubt, be the subject of a future poem.

Cluster Headache - Acute and Prophylactic Therapy

 
 

Avi Ashkenazi, MD, is currently a member of the Neurologic Group of Bucks/Montgomery County in Pennsylvania. Dr. Ashkenazi graduated from the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical School in Jerusalem, Israel, where he also completed his Neurology residency. He completed a clinical fellowship in Headache and Facial Pain at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH, and then continued his training as a Research Fellow in Headache and Facial Pain at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Dr. Ashkenazi then held a position as assistant professor of Neurology at Thomas Jefferson University and as attending physician at the Department of Neurology-Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Dr. Ashkenazi has published numerous papers and several book chapters on the clinical aspects and basic mechanisms of migraine and other headaches. His special interests include the use of peripheral nerve blocks and botulinum toxin injections for headaches; the mechanisms of phonophobia in migraine; cutaneous allodynia in migraine and other headaches; and hormone-related headaches. He recently directed a course on peripheral nerve blocks and other invasive procedures for headaches and facial pain at the American Academy of Neurology Annual Scientific Meeting in Toronto. Dr. Ashkenazi is an active member of the American Headache Society Special Interest Section on Peripheral Nerve Blocks and Other Interventional Procedures for Headache and Facial Pain. Dr. Ashkenazi is the recipient of the American Academy of Neurology Harold Wolff - John Graham Award for Headache and Facial Pain Research.

A Comparison of OnabotulinumtoxinA and Topiramate for the Treatment of Chronic Migraine

 

Roger K. Cady, MD, FAHS, is Director of the Headache Care Center, Director of Clinvest and Founder of Primary Care Network, as well as CEO of Banyan Group Inc., all located in Springfield, Missouri. Dr. Cady received his MD degree from the Mayo Medical School in Rochester, MN. He completed his residency in family practice at St. Francis Mayo in LaCrosse, WI, and is certified by the American Board of Family Practice. He is a fellow of the American Headache Society and a member of the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pain Management and the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Cady is associate executive chairman for the National Headache Foundation.

Dr. Cady was the co-recipient of the Harold Wolff Award in 2000 for his research on the spectrum of primary headache in migraine sufferers. In October 2009 he received the Janet Travell Pain Management Award which is presented to a clinician who has contributed to the advancement of the field of pain management and the welfare of others through direct clinical services.

He has been instrumental in developing the early intervention paradigm for treatment of acute migraine and defining “sinus headache” as a common clinical presentation of migraine. He has authored/co-authored over 150 peer-reviewed journal articles and has written and contributed to numerous books, chapters and abstracts as well as countless lectures and seminars around the world on headache, migraine and other chronic disorders. He has been and continues to be the principal investigator in multi-center studies on migraine, post-traumatic headache and other pain disorders.

Randolph W. Evans, MD, FAHS, a graduate of Baylor College of Medicine, is Clinical Professor of Neurology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas and is subspecialty certified in Headache Medicine. He is on the editoral board of 11 journals including Headache and Headache Currents. Dr. Evans has published over 200 journal publications, 70 book chapters, and is the editor or co-author of 16 books.

Migraine and Obesity: Epidemiology, Mechanisms, and Implications

Dr. Peterlin, a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Oseopathic Medicine, is the Director of Johns Hopkins Headache Research where she is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology at Johns Hopkins Bayview. In addition to migraine and obesity, she has done research on the associations between migraine and both PTSD and physical and sexual abuse.

Child Maltreatment and Migraine (Parts I, II, and III)

Dr. Gretchen Tietjen, a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School, is a Professor and Chair of Neurology at the University of Toledo. She specializes in Vascular Neurology and Headache Medicine. She does research on the relationship of migraine and stroke, and also on the longterm health effects of childhood abuse.
