Health Care Financing Review

While the Health Care Financing Review (HCFR) has served its readership and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) well for a number of years, recent changes in CMS programs, along with the current range of publication technology options, had convinced us to redirect both our editorial focus and dissemination medium.

In 2010, members of the Office of Research, Development, and Information (ORDI) have consulted with a number of individuals and small groups to solicit input on the best way forward for our journal. The people we met with had two things in common. First, they are highly regarded as researchers, editors, publishers, and health policy experts; second, they have a genuine interest in CMS programs and believe, as we do, that it is essential for the agency to have a peer-reviewed publication to serve as an authoritative medium for disseminating high-quality and relevant research to a wide audience of Medicare, Medicaid, and Children's Health Insurance stakeholders.

We are pleased to inform you that the outcome of these external consultations, combined with many hours of internal planning and deliberations among CMS staff, have brought us to the next step in our endeavor—a new journal, the Medicare & Medicaid Research Review (MMRR).

Medicare & Medicaid Research Review (ISSN 2159-0354) is a peer-reviewed, online journal reporting data and research that informs current and future directions of the Medicare, Medicaid, and Children's Health Insurance programs. The journal seeks to examine and evaluate health care coverage, quality and access to care for beneficiaries, and payment for health services. There will be no subscription or author publishing fee for MMRR.

While MMRR will be the focus of our efforts, the legacy of the HCFR will be preserved and enhanced. Currently you may search the abstracts of all past HCFR articles (click “Abstract Search for the "Review" below) and download searchable-text PDF documents of articles published between 1998 and 2008 (click “List of Past Articles” on left). ORDI plans to convert all past HCFR articles into fully accessible electronic files in the future.

All published material that appeared in HCFR is in the public domain and may be reproduced or copied without permission; however, citation to source is appreciated.
