Abstract

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) was originally established in 1950. The NINDS conducts and supports research and research training on the causes, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of neurological disorders and stroke. The Institute awards grants for research projects, program projects, and center grants; provides training support to institutions and fellowships to individuals in the fields of neurological disorders and stroke; conducts intramural and collaborative research; and collects and disseminates research information. Requests for information should be directed to the Office of Communications and Public Liaison.

Publications

Consumer publications are available on autism, Batten disease, brain and spinal cord tumors, cerebral palsy, dystonias, febrile seizures, Guillain-Barre syndrome, headache, head injury, multiple sclerosis, neurofibromatosis, Parkinson's disease, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, stroke, post-polio syndrome, progressive supranuclear palsy, syringomyelia, epilepsy, Huntington's disease, pain, shingles, restless leg syndrome, Rett syndrome, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease), arteriovenous malformations, cephalic disorders, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, Friedreich's ataxia, hydrocephalus, sleep, transverse myelitis, tuberous sclerosis, and Tourette syndrome. Information for professionals includes material on research and training programs, stroke, syringomyelia, and spinal cord injury.
