CT/OS ENROLLMENT STATUS
Recruitment for the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) began in
September 1993. The last participant in the CT enrolled in December 1998. The
CaD trial enrolled women who were already in the HT and/or DM trials for up to 2
years and their randomizations continued until July 31, 2000. The OS
completed enrollment on December 31, 1998.

Recruitment Issues
Each clinical center faced its individual challenge in
recruiting participants especially for the HT component. In some areas of the
country, hormones are routinely prescribed to alleviate menopausal symptoms and
thus finding eligible women to participate in the HT was a challenging
endeavor. In other areas, women are confused about the risks of taking hormones
due to reports of a potential increase in breast cancer risk. The WHI was
the first clinical trial to address and answer the benefits and the potential
adverse effects of HT.
