Abstract

Safe Sitter, founded in 1980 by a pediatrician after a nurse's child choked to death in the care of an adult babysitter, is a non-profit, medically oriented instructional program for teenagers aged 11-13. The goal of the 6 1/2 hour or 12 1/2 hour course is to reduce the number of avoidable and unintentional deaths among children in the care of adolescent babysitters. Courses are taught nationwide by trained instructors in hospitals, schools, service organizations and other community-minded groups registered to offer the pre-developed curriculum. The course stresses how to handle major and minor emergencies, basic child care and how to be an ethical babysitter. There is a $10-75 fee; scholarships are available for those unable to pay.
