Biotechnology Import and Export Information
APHIS' Biotechnology Regulatory Services (BRS) requires a permit or notification for the import of certain genetically engineered organisms.
Sanitary and Phytosanitary Management (Trade Facilitation)
APHIS takes part in negotiations with foreign regulatory officials to address sanitary (animal health) and phytosanitary (plant health) issues
which may restrict, limit, or impede U.S. agricultural exports. These technical negotiations are critical in helping maintain overseas markets for U.S. agriculture, forestry, and fisheries exports, worth over $62 billion in FY 2005. As World Trade Organization (WTO) and bilateral agreements expand trade, they reduce or eliminate traditional barriers to free trade such as tariffs.
