CPI for all items rises 0.6% in August as gasoline index rises 9.0%

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 0.6 percent in August after being unchanged in July. The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.1 percent in August, the same increase as in July.

Real average hourly earnings falls 0.7 percent in August

Real average hourly earnings fell 0.7 percent in August, seasonally adjusted, due to unchanged average hourly earnings combined with a 0.6 percent gain in the CPI-U. Real average weekly earnings fell 0.6 percent over the month.

New England:

Boston area consumer prices rose 0.8% over the year ending July 2012

New York-New Jersey:

A 5.4-percent jump in gasoline prices helps push up the August New York CPI 0.6 percent

Mid-Atlantic:

Philadelphia area prices up 0.9 percent since June and 1.4 percent since August 2011

Southeast:

Consumer prices in the South up 0.6% in August and 1.6% over the year

Midwest:

Chicago area consumer prices were up 0.6% in August and were up 1.5% over the year

Southwest:

Houston area consumer prices fall 0.4% in July and August; rise 0.7% over the year

Mountain-Plains:

Midwest CPI rose 0.7% in Aug led by 8.9% rise in motor fuel prices; up 1.8% over the year

West:

Los Angeles area prices down 0.1% in July; up 1.9% over the year
