Message from Dr. Susan B. Shurin

October 6, 2010

Dear NHLBI Colleagues:
On October 23-24, the NIH will join more than 500 of the nation's leading science and engineering organizations in a two-day celebration of science on the National Mall and Freedom Plaza in downtown Washington, DC.  The USA Science and Engineering Festival Expo is free, open to the public, and includes 1,500 interactive exhibits and 75 stage shows, including a performance by Dr. Collins at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 24.
Please consider attending the festival with your family and friends or volunteering to assist.  The NIH needs staff members to help set up and take down activities, engage and direct crowds, and provide logistical support to our 37 exhibits throughout the weekend.  Volunteers will be matched with specific jobs as best as possible.

The NHLBI will host exhibits on both Expo days, including interactive demonstrations of ultrasound body imaging, activities to engage children and families to maintain a healthy weight through the We Can! program, and a COPD motion simulator that immerses riders in a five-minute microscopic journey to the "Center of the Lung."

The Expo is designed to provide fun and interactive science activities for kids of all ages and their families.  More than 200 staff from 25 NIH institutes, centers, and offices will host hands-on activities to stimulate interest in topics that include science careers, clinical research, healthy living, and imaging technology.

To sign up as a volunteer, please visit http://science.education.nih.gov/SciFest-Volunteers by Friday, Oct. 15.  The site provides details and contact information if you have questions.  This is an officially sanctioned and recognized NIH activity.  If you would like to assist with the NHLBI booths specifically, please contact our Expo liaisons in the NHLBI Office of Communications, Stephanie Dutchen and Morgan Woerner.

We thank you for your support and hope you enjoy the Expo!

Best regards,

Susan
