Reference Guide
The Learning Taxonomy Levels for Developing Competencies and Learning Outcomes Reference Guide (Reference Guide) is a tool to aid the development of outcomes-oriented curriculum and instruction. The guide will help faculty in selecting action verbs, instructional strategies and evaluation methods based on the learning taxonomy levels for the cognitive and affective domains.

Competency Model in Action - One Method!
The diagram depicts one method of developing competencies. It describes the key components of an outcome-oriented approach to learning. The diagram can be used as a resource to develop education programs in public health.

Competency-Based Education
This diagram shows how competency-based education uses a taxonomical approach to identifying behaviors in three domains (cognitive, psychomotor, affective). The diagram can be used as a resource for work on competencies; knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs); and/or learning outcomes.

Milestones in Public Health Curriculum
ASPH, with funding from Pfizer, awarded The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services (GW SPHHS) a grant to develop an introductory public health course titled, "Milestones in Public Health." GW SPHHS developed the course in collaboration with the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences, the GW Graduate School of Education and Human Development, and the GW Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning. The course is composed of 11 modules based on the 11 chapter topics in the book, Milestones in Public Health -[pdf], and serves as a user-friendly tool for teaching undergraduate, graduate public health, and medical and clinical education students about the major milestones in public health in the U.S. over the last century.

Ethics and Public Health: Model Curriculum Released
In 2007, ASPH, with funding from Pfizer, announced a request for applications to support one SPH in creating an introductory public health course titled, "Milestones in Public Health Curriculum Development." The George Washington University (GW) School of Public Health and Health Services won the award in September 2007 as a result of a competitive bidding process. GW is developing the course in collaboration with the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences, the GW Graduate School of Education and Human Development, and the GW Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning.

DrPH Core Competency Model
Developed between February 2008 and November 2009, the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) competencies built upon the foundation of the MPH competency project. The DrPH competencies target future graduates regardless of specialization. For more information, click here.
MPH Core Competency Model
Developed between August 2004 and August 2006, the Master of Public Health (MPH) competencies target MPH students upon graduation. For more information, click here.
Competencies for the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree include:
-
Five core discipline areas (Biostatistics, Environmental Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Health Policy Management, and Social and Behavioral Sciences)
-
An integrated interdisciplinary, cross-cutting set of overall competency domains (Communication and Informatics, Diversity and Culture, Leadership, Professionalism, Program Planning, Public Health Biology, and Systems Thinking)
The competencies are intended to serve as a resource and guide for those interested in improving the quality and accountability of public health education and training. They were developed with respect for the uniqueness and diversity of the schools of public health (SPH). They are not meant to prescribe the methods or processes for achievement, recognizing that implementation of the competencies may vary as a function of each school’s mission and goals.
Women's Health Curriculum Report
ASPH is pleased to announce the release of the women's health curriculum report. The aim of the study was to assess how women’s health is addressed in required and elective courses for the Master of Public Health degree. Through this project, ASPH and its Federal partners sought to extend the available information at SPHs regarding an increased recognition of women’s health issues across the life span.
