EPA Regional Radiation Protection Programs
EPA has ten regional offices across the country, each of which is responsible for several states and in some cases, territories or special environmental programs. Each region has a radiation protection program. To find more information about the radiation protection program where you live, click on the number of the region in which you live.
Each of EPA’s ten regional radiation protection programs supports Agency objectives in the following ways:
- Regional radiation programs raise radon awareness and work with citizens to protect against exposure through EPA’s State Indoor Radon Grant (SIRG) Program.
- Regional staff support state and local programs, including preparing for and responding to radiological emergencies
- Regional programs are active in enforcing National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants for Radionuclides (Rad NESHAPs)
Region 1 – Headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts
Serving: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont and 9 Tribal Nations
In EPA's Region 1, elevated radon levels have been found in many areas. Radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas can seep into buildings and dissolve in ground water. EPA is addressing radon in the Region by raising awareness and working with citizens and State Radon programs to protect against exposure throughEPA’s State Indoor Radon Grant (SIRG) Program
RadNet
RadNetis a national network of monitoring stations that regularly collect air, precipitation, drinking water, and milk samples for analysis of radioactivity. The RadNet network has been used to track environmental releases resulting from nuclear emergencies and to provide baseline data during routine conditions. Data generated from RadNet's predecessor, ERAMS, provides the information base for making decisions necessary to ensure the protection of public health. There are fixed RadNet monitors located in each New England state.
The New England Radiological Health Compact (NERHC)
The NERHC, established in the late 1960’s, is composed of the six New England state Radiation Control Program Directors, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Regional Radiological Health Representative and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Regional Radiation Representative. The purpose of the New England Radiological Health Compact is to (a) promote the Radiological Health Protection of the public, and individuals within party states, (b) provide mutual aid and assistance in radiological health matters including, but not limited to, radiation incidents, and (c) encourage and facilitate the efficient use of personnel and equipment by furthering the orderly acquisition and sharing of resources useful for programs of radiation protection.

Region 2 – Headquartered in New York, New York
Serving: New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands and 7 Tribal Nations
In Region 2 elevated radon levels have been found in many areas in New York and New Jersey. Levels in Puerto Rico tend to be lower due to a combination of lower levels in the soil and the open style of housing common on the island.
EPA Region 2 works closely with New York and New Jersey to develop State Indoor Radon Grant (SIRG) Program. The goal of these projects is to increase awareness and testing for radon, and to encourage corrective actions for homes with high radon levels. These States have some of the most highly developed and successful programs in the country. We strongly recommend that you contact them directly to see what programs may help you lower your risk from radon.
Along with the radon program, the Region 2 Radiation Program protects people and the environment in the Region against harmful exposure to radiation by providing technical assistance to state and local radiation protection and emergency response programs. In addition, the radiation program provides radiation training, expertise, and technical support to the EPA Superfund Program during radiological emergencies, spills, accidents, and radiation site cleanup. Region 2 staff supports the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) radiological emergency response program by serving on FEMA's Regional Assistance Committee. The EPA Region 2 staff reviews state/county radiological emergency preparedness plans and provides evaluators for federally mandated biennial exercises at each of the ten operating nuclear power plants in the Region.
Additionally, the Region 2 Radiation Program participates in the operation and maintenance of seven RadNet stations in the Region as well. RadNet is a national network of radiation monitors which monitor ambient air continuously for radioactive contamination.

Region 3 – Headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Serving: Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia
The EPA Region 3 Radiation Program's mission is to protect human health and the environment from harmful levels of ionizing radiation.
US EPA's Radiation Program carries out the Agency's mission to issue policy guidance and regulations, measure environmental radiation levels, evaluate the impact of radiation on public health, respond to emergencies involving radiation, work with state and local governments and industry groups to reduce harmful levels of radiation, and provide information to the public.
In Region 3, the radiation program:
- Informs people about the hazards of radon gas and other forms of ionizing radiation
- Provides technical support on ionizing radiation issues to federal, state, and local governments
- Regulates radionuclide emissions and provides guidance on compliance with the Clean Air Act's National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) on radionuclides
- Provides technical support for cleanup of radiation-contaminated sites
- Assists in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) emergency exercise evaluations about dispersal of radioactive materials

Region 4 – Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia
Serving: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and 6 Tribal Nations
EPA’s Region 4 Radiation Program protects people and the environment in the Region against harmful exposure to radiation by providing training and technical assistance to state and local programs, including providing radiation expertise and environmental and personal exposure monitoring to the Superfund Program during radiological emergencies, spills, and radiation site cleanup. Region 4 staff evaluates and participates in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) emergency response exercises around nuclear power plants, and provides assistance for other radiological emergency response exercises.

Region 5 – Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois
Serving: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Wisconsin and 35 Tribal Nations
EPA's Region 5 Radiation Protection Program works to develop protective criteria, standards, and policies and evaluates and assesses the overall risk and impact of radiation in the environment. The Radiation Program protects people and the environment in the Region against harmful exposure to radiation by providing radiation training and technical assistance to state tribal, and local programs, in addition to providing radiation expertise and environmental and personal exposure monitoring to the Superfund Program during radiological emergencies, spills, preparedness exercises, and radiation site cleanup. Region 5 actively monitors environmental radiation through the RadNet radiation monitoring Program and enforces the radionuclide sections of the Clean air Act. There are currently 23 operating nuclear Reactors in Region 5.

Region 6 – Headquartered in Dallas, Texas
Serving: Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and 66 Tribal Nations
The Region 6 Radiation Protection Program protect people and the environment from harmful exposure to radiation by regulating radiation emissions and providing guidance on radiation protection policy, as well as measuring environmental radiation levels and evaluating the impact of radiation on public health. Region 6 also responds and provides support in the case of emergencies involving radiation.

Region 7 – Headquartered in Kansas City, Kansas
Serving: Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and 9 Tribal Nations
The Region 7 radiation protection activities are housed in the Air Planning & Development Branch. Region 7 provides technical support for site-specific radiation problems by coordinating with the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Region 7 office and evaluating emergency preparedness exercises for the six nuclear power plants that affect Region 7 as part of FEMA's Regional Assistance Committee.
In addition, the Region 7 Radiation Safety Officer provides technical training to staff and partners, monitors radiation exposure of individuals who work with radioactive materials through the radiation detection badge program, and ensures compliance with NRC regulations. Region 7 provides information and assistance to the public about radiation and radiation protection issues such as radon, and assists states in developing projects to increase awareness, testing, and repair of structures where indoor radon is an identified or suspected problem.

Region 8 – Headquartered in Denver, Colorado
Serving: Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming and 27 Tribal Nations
The EPA Region 8 Radiation Protection Program is housed both in the Air and Radiation Program and within the Preparedness, Assessment and Response Program. The Radiation Protection Program aims to protect the Region's people and the Rocky Mountain environment from harmful exposure to radiation by providing Regional contacts for radiation and radon protection assistance. Along with managing the Region’s Radiation Safety Program and acting as the regional radiation safety office, the Radiation Protection Program coordinates with the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Region 8 office to prepare for emergencies.
The Region 8 Radiation Protection Program also provides technical training to staff and partners, monitors radiation exposure of individuals who work with radioactive materials through the radiation detection badge program, ensures compliance with NRC regulations, and provides information to the public.

EPA’s Region 9 Radiation Protection Program regulates radiation emissions and provides guidance on radiation protection policy, as well as evaluating the impact of radiation on public health. Region 9 also responds to emergencies involving radiation as needed and provides radiation protection materials and information to the public.

Region 10 also provides radiation expertise and environmental and personnel monitoring to the Superfund Program during radiological emergencies, spills, and radiation site cleanups. The staff in Region 10 evaluates and participates in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) emergency response exercises around nuclear power plants and prepares and executes other radiation emergency exercises.
