HIT Policy Committee 3/17: Meeting Summary

On March 17th, the HIT Policy Committee held a meeting in Washington, DC. Dr. Blumenthal opened the meeting with a few words about the criticality of the work to come: “Every issue on the agenda today is fascinating and complex and important….You continue to be the foundation for a lot of the inspiration and direction of the Office of the National Coordinator and federal HIT policy.” (more…)

HIT Standards Committee Implementation Workgroup 3/8: Hearing Summary

On March 8th, the HIT Standards Committee Implementation Workgroup held a hearing in Washington, DC, on strategies, opportunities, and challenges to the implementation of EHRs. Aneesh Chopra, the Chair of the Implementation Workgroup and the White House Chief Technology Officer, opened the session by setting the goals of the meeting – listening to success stories from panelists in the public and private sectors that could spur meaningful use of EHRs. HIT Standards Committee 2/24: Meeting Summary

On February 24th, the HIT Standards Committee held its tenth meeting in Washington, D.C. Dr. David Blumenthal, the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, opened the meeting with an acknowledgment of how busy the ONC has been over the last few months, “not just on the rule writing front, but also on the grant making front.” Dr. Blumenthal told listeners that the next few months would mark announcements of additional programs, “designed to support the provider and patient community to make the best use of health IT and to build on the foundation of standards and certification criteria.” (more…)

HIT Standards Committee 1/20: Meeting Summary

On January 20th, the HIT Standards Committee held its January meeting in Washington, DC. Jonathan Perlin, the Chair of the HIT Standards Committee, initiated the meeting with a quote from Dr. David Blumenthal’s recent New England Journal of Medicine article, “Information is the lifeblood of modern medicine. Health information technology is destined to be its circulatory system.” This quote set the tone for the rest of the day, in which committee members examined how standards, implementation specifications, and certification criteria — as seen in the recently released Interim Final Rule (IFR) and meaningful use Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) – can transform healthcare.

HIT Policy Committee 1/15: Meeting Summary

On January 13, the HIT Policy Committee held its meeting in Washington, DC. During the meeting, Tony Trenkle, the CMS member of the HIT Policy Committee, and Farzad Mostashari of ONC gave an overview of the NPRM for the EHR Incentive Programs for Medicare and Medicaid on Meaningful Use, reviewing the document’s definitions of meaningful use and hospital based eligible professionals, and reminding attendants that the comment period ends March 15th.  (more…)
