Cooking Up a Volcano

Grades 4-6
Science, Language Arts

Overview

Starting with the Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park quarter, the students will visit the park’s website to describe how volcanoes are formed and how they function.  Texts, images, and videos will activate the students’ background knowledge of volcanoes.  The students will research the basic features of volcanoes especially in Hawaii, and record information on worksheets and organizers.  The students will use creative writing to generate a “recipe” for making a volcano.
