Richard Murphy won second-place, and $3,000 in the SBA-backed ‘Apps for Entrepreneurs’ challenge. The ‘Apps for Entrepreneurs’ challenge prompted developers around the country to build new and useful web tools for small businesses to access federal, state and local databases for resources they could use to grow their businesses. Seven winners emerged from California to Virginia to claim a total of $20,000 in prizes.

Murphy’s winning application quickly and efficiently helps business owners find information about financing programs and grants.

Murphy reported that he developed most of the application at the DCWeek Hackathon. “It didn’t take long to get the application up and running because the Loans & Grants Search API is easy to use and the documentation is extremely thorough,” explains Murphy.

Murphy is a programmer for Information Management Services Inc. in Silver Spring, MD. He enjoys creating applications in his spare time, and is excited that small businesses may be able to find useful information in the winning application he developed.

Entrepreneurs and small business owners can download Murphy’s application, and check out other winning submissions at http://entrepreneurs.challenge.gov/submissions. All the new mobile applications complement SBA’s mobile application created for iPhone in partnership with Palo Alto Software.
