Montana's Response to Obesity

  • American Indian Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Initiative - The Montana Department of Health and Human Services is funding seven tribal health departments, enabling each of them to take part in the Nutrition and Physical Activity Program.

Adult Overweight and Obesity

Among Montana’s adults age 18 and over 1

  • 60.3% of adults were overweight, with a Body Mass Index of 25 or greater
  • 23.0% of adults were obese, with a Body Mass Index of 30 or greater

Adolescent Overweight and Obesity 2

Among Montana's adolescents in grades 9 through 12 2

  • 11.9% were overweight (> 85th and < 95th percentiles for BMI by age and sex)
  • 10.4% were obese (> 95th percentile for BMI by age and sex)

Child Overweight and Obesity

Among Montana's children aged 2 years to less than 5 years 3

  • 15.9% were overweight (85th to <95th percentile BMI-for-Age)
  • 12.2% were obese (>95th percentile BMI-for-Age)
