Nebraska's Response to Obesity

  • To help foster healthy weight in Nebraska’s youth a number of partner organizations collaborated to develop a Health Care Provider Toolkit with training video and clinic resources to assist pediatric providers in assessing, preventing, and treating childhood obesity.

  • The “Whatcha Doin?” Campaign depends on peer promoters to carry out innovative acts to promote healthy eating and physical activity on high school campuses.

  • The Great Park Pursuit Outdoor Adventure promotes Nebraska’s park and recreational opportunities by encouraging residents to discover a healthier lifestyle by taking advantage of Nebraska’s outdoor recreation opportunities.

Adult Overweight and Obesity

Among Nebraska's adults age 18 and over 1

  • 64.1% of adults were overweight, with a Body Mass Index of 25 or greater
  • 26.9% of adults were obese, with a Body Mass Index of 30 or greater

Adolescent Overweight and Obesity

2009 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) adolescent obesity data is not available, as Nebraska’s overall response rate was below 60%, the minimum necessary for statewide reporting.

Child Overweight and Obesity

  • 16.7% were overweight (85th to <95th percentile BMI-for-Age)
  • 13.8% were obese (>95th percentile BMI-for-Age)
