Texas's Response to Obesity

  • The Texas Nutrition Environment Assessment is a tool used to meet the needs of Texas communities and to focus specifically on obesity by considering the calorie content of food options.

Adult Overweight and Obesity

Among Texas's adults age 18 and over 1

  • 65.9% of adults were overweight, with a Body Mass Index of 25 or greater
  • 31.0% of adults were obese, with a Body Mass Index of 30 or greater

Adolescent Overweight and Obesity

Among Texas’s adolescents in grades 9 through 12 2

  • 15.6% were overweight (> 85th and < 95th percentiles for BMI by age and sex)
  • 13.6% were obese (> 95th percentile for BMI by age and sex)

Child Overweight and Obesity

Among Texas's children aged 2 years to less than 5 years 3

  • 16.8% were overweight (85th to <95th percentile BMI-for-Age)
  • 15.3% were obese (>95th percentile BMI-for-Age)
