4.  Nugget from the Vault
Nugget from the Vault
Few moments in the 20th Century have been examined and probed in greater detail than the events that occurred in Dallas, Texas, on the morning of November 22, 1963. When three shots were fired in rapid succession from an open sixth floor window above Dealey Plaza, the course of our Nation’s history was irrevocably changed. In the Historian’s Corner section of our website, you can read the full story behind the creation of the John F. Kennedy Half-Dollar commemorating his life. The Historian’s Corner contains other interesting “Nuggets,” archived documents, and coin images that unlock the history of the Mint.

6.  A Major Meeting
A Major Meeting in Utah
Few meetings in the 1860s were as monumental as the meeting of the Central Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads at Promontory, Utah. The eastern and western parts of the country were linked there, starting a network of travel and communications that had a lasting impact on the development of the United States. Learn more about the event selected for commemoration on the Utah quarter, the coin featured as on the United States Mint H.I.P. Pocket Change™ Web site for kids.
