The Universal Medical Device Nomenclature System™ (UMDNS) is a standard worldwide nomenclature for medical devices that has been officially adopted by many nations. It is produced by the ECRI Institute.

Purpose
UMDNS is a standard international nomenclature and computer coding system for medical devices. The purpose of UMDNS is to facilitate the identifying, processing, filing, storing, retrieving, transferring, and communicating of data about medical devices.

Description
UMDNS contains nearly 7,500 preferred terms and 8,000 entry terms. UMDNS defines explicit hierarchical and synonymous relationships among these terms.

UMDNS is also available in Spanish from the ECRI Institute.

Audience
UMDNS is used in applications for hospital inventory control, work order control, and medical device regulatory systems.
