International Classification of Diseases,
Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM)

The International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) is based on the World Health Organization's Ninth Revision, International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9). ICD-9-CM is the official system of assigning codes to diagnoses and procedures associated with hospital utilization in the United States. The ICD-9 is used to code and classify mortality data from death certificates.

The ICD-9-CM consists of:

a tabular list containing a numerical list of the disease code numbers in tabular form;
an alphabetical index to the disease entries; and
a classification system for surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures (alphabetic index and tabular list).

The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services are the U.S. governmental agencies responsible for overseeing all changes and modifications to the ICD-9-CM.

ICD-9-CM on CD-ROM

This product contains the complete official version of the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (Volumes 1, 2, 3, and Guidelines), compiled by the National Center for Health Statistics and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The ICD-9-CM CD-ROM contains all changes issued through October 1, 2011. This CD-ROM supersedes all previous issues. The files on the CD-ROM are in Folio InfoBase format using version 4.7 of Folio Views (see system requirements below).

System requirements

The minimum requirements are an IBM-compatible computer running under Windows with the following:

Intel-compatible processor running at 512 MHz or faster
32 megabytes of RAM
Standard peripherals (monitor, mouse and keyboard)
10 megabytes of hard disk space
Windows 2000 Professional, 2003 server, XP Home, XP Pro, XP 64 bit, Vista or Windows 7
