Kansas City, (MO)… The National Archives at Kansas City will be offering two free genealogy workshops in July. Navigating the National Archives Website will be held on Saturday, July 14, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and Researching African American Genealogy will be held on Saturday, July 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The workshops will be held at 400 West Pershing Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64108.

Navigating the National Archives Website

Saturday, July 14, 2012, 10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

Given the depth and breadth of records available at the National Archives, it can be difficult to know where to look for resources on our website, www.archives.gov. This course will highlight portions of it, including: researching our records, locating veterans’ records, and ordering online.

Researching African American Genealogy

Saturday, July 21, 2012, 8:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Join researcher and author, Dr. Dorothy Witherspoon, as she teaches about genealogy research strategies and resources to help explore African American family history. The class will explore online resources, case studies, and use hands-on examples. Beginners and experienced family historians are welcome. Participants will have an opportunity to share information, conduct independent research, and consult with specialists in African American genealogy. Dr. Witherspoon will sign copies of her book, Researching Slave Ancestry; from 12:00 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. Books must be pre-ordered prior to the event.

Dr. Dorothy Witherspoon, a member of the National Genealogy Society and founding member of the Midwest African American Genealogy Interest Coalition (MAGIC), has conducted workshops for many organizations. In 1990, she published The Homecoming, a book about her family’s history, which is now in its second printing. Her second book, Researching Slave Ancestry, is designed to help African American families explore their roots, and develop an appreciation for the rich diversity of people’s lives.

The National Archives at Kansas City is one of 13 facilities nationwide where the public has access to Federal archival records. It is home to more than 50,000 cubic feet of historical records dating from the 1820s to the 1990s created or received by nearly 100 Federal agencies. Serving the Central Plains Region, the archives holds records from the states of Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The facility is located at 400 West Pershing Road, Kansas City, MO 64108.
