On July 19, 1999, the Georgia quarter was unveiled at a ceremony at the state's capitol. This "peach" of a coin made Georgia the fourth state to be celebrated in the fascinating 50 State Quarters® Program.
Teachers, below you will find several activities and links that will bring the excitement of Georgia's "State Quarter Day" into your classroom.

Connected Coins and Medals
America's first Gold Rush began in Georgia in 1828, and by 1938 a branch of the United States Mint was opened in the town of Dahlonega, GA. Read below to learn about another Georgian coin connection!
Georgia is also home to the National Prisoner of War Museum, which was built on the grounds of a Civil War prison camp to honor the courage and sacrifice of American POWs. Read about the special commemorative coin that was minted in 1994 out of respect for those special individuals who suffered in the name of our nation. |
Our Foreign Friends
The coins produced for the 50 State Quarters Program share much in common with the European currency, the euro. With your students, visit the interactive cartoon, Coins of the World, to see how these two programs are similar (here's a hint: look at the backs of euros from different countries, and then look at their fronts). |
