In an effort to open an active discussion with the larger epidemiology research community about the future of epidemiology as it relates to cardiovascular disease, the NHLBI has launched a digital forum: Challenges in Cardiovascular Epidemiology.

Developed by the NHLBI Division of Cardiovascular Sciences (DCVS) with support from the NHLBI Office of Communications, the forum grew out of a commentary prepared by DCVS staff for the American Journal of Epidemiology. The commentary describes four primary challenges faced by the general epidemiology research community, specifically cardiovascular epidemiologists, and notes that new directions, approaches, and/or study designs are needed. It underscores the NHLBI’s desire to engage in dialogue with the epidemiology community to address these issues and challenges and discuss appropriate solutions.

"We are eager to include multiple communities in this conversation, and to incorporate new and creative approaches into our research agenda.  I am very enthusiastic about approaching focused questions this way," said NHLBI Acting Director Susan B. Shurin, M.D.

The NHLBI is seeking input from the epidemiology community and welcomes a lively conversation about these challenges. We hope you will join us. With your help, we can continue to move the field forward with novel ideas.

The forum's launch coincides with the American Heart Association Epidemiology and Prevention (EPI/NPAM) 2012 Scientific Sessions in San Diego on March 13-16.
