Figure 2.7 is titled "Past Month Illicit Drug Use among Persons Aged 12 or Older, by County Type: 2002 through 2004." It is a bar graph, where county type is shown on the horizontal axis, and the percentage using illicit drugs in the past month is shown on the vertical axis. County type is broken down into five groups: large metropolitan counties, small metropolitan counties, urbanized nonmetropolitan counties, less urbanized nonmetropolitan counties, and rural nonmetropolitan counties. For each county type, there are bars representing 2002, 2003, and 2004. Tests of statistical significance at the .05 level were performed between 2003 and 2004 estimates and between 2002 and 2004 estimates; significant results are indicated where appropriate.

The percentage of persons in large metropolitan counties using illicit drugs in the past month was 8.7 percent in 2002, 8.3 percent in 2003, and 8.1 percent in 2004.
The percentage of persons in small metropolitan counties using illicit drugs in the past month was 8.4 percent in 2002, 8.6 percent in 2003, and 8.5 percent in 2004.
The percentage of persons in urbanized nonmetropolitan counties using illicit drugs in the past month was 7.9 percent in both 2002 and 2003 and 7.6 percent in 2004.
The percentage of persons in less urbanized nonmetropolitan counties using illicit drugs in the past month was 6.1 percent in 2002, 7.0 percent in 2003, and 5.6 percent in 2004. The difference between the 2003 estimate and 2004 estimate was significant.
The percentage of persons in rural nonmetropolitan counties using illicit drugs in the past month was 6.7 percent in 2002, 3.1 percent in 2003, and 4.6 percent in 2004.
