Find out more about each of the Presidential $1 Coins and their presidents in the "The Coins Are Coming" section. Martin Van Buren was the first president who was born an America citizen, the first from the state of New York, and is the only president other than Thomas Jefferson to serve as Secretary of State, Vice President, and President. Divide the students into pairs or small groups. Have each student pair or small group research the roles and responsibilities of the Secretary of State, Vice President, and President. Have each student pair or small group create a large Venn diagram or other visual aid that outlines the similarities and differences between each of these positions. Have the students or student pair then choose one former Secretary of State, Vice President, or President to research and present a small biography on. Have students share their research and visual aids with the class. Display student visual aids around the classroom.
