This award supports the career development of investigators who are committed to patient-oriented research. It provides support for supervised study and research for clinically trained professionals who have the potential to develop into productive, clinical investigators focusing on patient-oriented research.

Important Note Regarding the Requirement for "Patient-Oriented" Research - The K23 candidate, him/herself, must interact directly with the study participants, preferably in ongoing clinical activities. Candidates who propose to only analyze extant databases or biological specimens, see study participants briefly (e.g., for a blood draw), or design a patient questionnaire that will be administered by other medical support staff, are not conducting research that is eligible for this award. Epidemiologic, nutrition, behavioral and social science research are included in the spectrum of patient-oriented research supported by the K23 award as long as the candidate interacts directly with study participants.

If the project does not include direct interaction with study participants, consider applying instead for other NIH mentored K awards, such as the NIH Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award (Parent K08), which allows human subjects research. This program provides research development opportunities for clinicians with varying levels of research experience. Support is provided for a minimum of 3 years and a maximum of 5 years.

NHLBI requires an IRB-approved data and safety monitoring plan for: (1) all clinical trials regardless of phase, and (2) all clinical research with greater than minimal risk.

Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award (Parent K23) Program Announcement (PA-11-194)

Who is eligible? Candidates must have an M.D., D.D.S., D.M.D., D.O., D.C., Pharm.D., D.S.W., or the Ph.D. or other doctoral degrees in disciplines such as clinical psychology, nursing, clinical genetics, and rehabilitation, or equivalent degree from an accredited domestic or foreign institution at the time of application. Certification by an authorized individual at the degree-granting institution that all degree requirements have been met is acceptable. Candidates must have completed their clinical training, including specialty and, if applicable, subspecialty training prior to receiving an award.

All candidates must be U.S. citizens, noncitizen nationals, or legal permanent residents of the U.S. Persons with temporary or student visas are not eligible.

NHLBI has a 6 year limit of cumulative support on institutional and mentored Ks (e.g., Institutional K awards such as K12 or KL2 plus the K23). A candidate for the K23 may not concurrently apply for or have an award pending for any other NIH career development award.

The opportunities? Research training/career development

Duration of support? Three to five years, at least 9 person-months (75 percent of full-time professional effort) to conducting patient-oriented research and related career development activities.

March 12, July 12, and November 12 - resubmission applications.

Salary: Up to $75,000 per year plus fringe benefits.

Research Development Support: $30,000 for research development support per year. With a strong rationale in the Budget Justification, up to $50,000 per year may be requested.

Please note: Candidates may submit an application for the "Mentored Research Scientist Development Award" (Parent K01, PA-11-190) rather than a K23 application if they are interested in the following focused research areas:

• Highly innovative epidemiological research that elucidates the mechanisms, etiology, pathogenesis, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart, lung, blood diseases, and sleep disorders.
• Biostatistics research leading to the development of new methods for designing and analyzing clinical studies, including clinical trials, epidemiologic and genetics studies in heart, lung, blood diseases, and sleep disorders.
• Comparative effectiveness research that involves the comparison of screening, diagnostic, preventive or treatment strategies of heart, lung, blood diseases, and sleep disorders using appropriate methods from randomized controlled trials to the analysis of electronic medical records.
